Who we are

Lionhouse Architects is a young architecture firm founded in April 2017 by Siebold Nijenhuis and Jan de Leeuw.

Siebold, with his experience in zoo design, and Jan, with a background in the design of botanical glasshouses, decided to combine these two worlds by starting a company focussed on enclosures for animals and plants.

Jan de Leeuw MSc

My childhood was characterized by playing outside, intrigued by everything that lived in the meadows and ditches. After getting my masters degree in Architecture at the Technical University in Delft I started my career working for different architecture firms, designing projects ranging from residential to public buildings. In the subsequent years I gained experience in (master)planning, concept design and redevelopment. The love for the natural environment was rediscovered working as a design consultant for a company specialized in constructing glasshouses for Zoos and Botanical Gardens.

I am an impassioned architect with a broad range of projects on my portfolio. An important part of my work the last ten years was within the Diergaarde Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam. There I experienced the joy and fulfillment of working on projects that provide a comfortable and natural home to animals, and that give visitors a memorable experience. My approach to the job is to team up with clients, staff and other parties to make each project a success on all aspects. I worked on the Kudu stable, the new Lion house, the Gelada exhibit, the Flamingo house and the Pachyderms wing.
